Seasonal Feeding for Medaka & Critical Temperatures
1 min read

Feeding Medaka
Medaka do not have stomachs so all food is digested and expelled within approx 2 1/2 hours. Feed during the warmer parts of the day.
Pellets should be crushed and ground down to the size that is suitable for your fish.
Only feed the amount that your fish will consume within five minutes.
Autumn and Winter:-
When the average daily water temperature drops to 15 degrees Centigrade (60 degrees Fahrenheit) their digestive absorption rate decreases. Food containing the higher levels of protein - that they have been consuming during the warmer summer months - must no longer be given.
Instead they need to be fed a lower protein level, in reduced amounts, during the warmer parts of the day in order that they can benefit from the nutrients.
Hikari Wheatgerm Formula is ideal since it contains all the necessary vitamins and minerals (including garlic) needed for the lower water temperatures.
Once the average daily water temperatures fall to 10 degrees Centigrade (50 degrees Fahrenheit) or below on four consecutive days then feeding should cease entirely.
At 6 degrees Centigrade, fish will cease movement and their metabolism will reduce to zero.
Spring:-
When the average daily water temperatures increase to 10 degrees the fish will start moving again and can be fed Hikari Wheatgerm Formula with the lower protein levels of 35%.
This is a critical time for them, so the vitamins, minerals, and garlic etc are ideal in order to boost their immune system and prevent diseases or bacterial infections developing.
Once the average daily water temperatures increase to 15 degrees Centigrade (60 degrees Fahrenheit) fish can be fed on food with higher protein levels.
