Chlorella Algae and Green Water for Medaka

Chlorella is a microscopic green algae widely used in fish keeping to create what hobbyists call “green water.” This lightly green-tinted water is rich in suspended microalgae and beneficial microorganisms that form a natural food web. In medaka keeping, green water is especially valued during breeding and early fry development because it supports both water quality and nutrition in a simple, natural way.

For breeding setups, green water helps create a stable environment. Microalgae absorb nitrogenous waste such as ammonia, reducing stress on adult fish and fry. The algae also provide gentle shading, which can make fish feel more secure and can limit sudden light changes. Many breeders find that medaka kept in green water display strong coloration and active spawning behavior, likely because the environment more closely resembles natural outdoor conditions.

For newborn fry, green water acts as a continuous, living food source. Newly hatched medaka are extremely small and may struggle with dry foods at first. In green water, they can graze on microalgae and the tiny organisms that thrive alongside it, such as protozoa and rotifers. This constant access to appropriately sized food supports steady growth and higher survival rates, particularly in the first critical days of life.

Using chlorella is straightforward. A small starter culture can be added to dechlorinated water placed in a bright area, ideally with sunlight or strong artificial light. Over time, the water develops a green tint as the algae multiply. Gentle aeration can help keep the culture healthy. When the water reaches a light to medium green color, portions can be added to breeding or fry tanks. Regular partial replacement and fresh cultures keep the system productive.

While green water is beneficial, balance matters. Extremely dense, dark green water can limit visibility and may reduce oxygen at night if overgrown. Maintaining a moderate green color and observing fish behavior ensures the system remains healthy.

Chlorella-based green water is not a replacement for all other foods or maintenance, but it is a powerful tool. Used thoughtfully, it provides natural nutrition, supports water stability, and gives medaka fry an excellent start during their most delicate stage of life.
